Charges

Being charged with a criminal offense can be stressful, confusing, and scary. The first step you should take if you have been charged with a crime in the state of Ohio is to contact an experienced attorney who can represent and guide you through the legal process. Your attorney will work on your behalf to ensure the most favorable outcome for you.

Whether you have been charged with a misdemeanor or a felony crime, the lawyers at Hoover Kacyon, LLC., are dedicated to supporting you. We deliver the highest quality legal representation from a team of professionals while also providing excellent customer service.

Conviction of any crime can have lasting effects on your freedom and rights. While a misdemeanor crime may be penalized by fines, community service, and court-ordered counseling, and jail time, being convicted of a felony can result in imprisonment, loss of voting rights, the right to own a firearm, or even lifelong registration as a sexual offender. All of these outcomes can have farther-reaching effects on your future rights, relationships, and even your employability.

Pleas and Plea Agreements

Many plea options exist in criminal cases, and not all criminal cases go to trial. Pleading guilty to charge means the charge will appear on your record and you will be sentenced according to penalties allowed under the law. A no-contest plea means you are not admitting guilt to the charges but you are not denying them either. You will be sentenced as though you pled guilty to the charge but this conviction cannot be used against in a related civil matter. A criminal case will only go to trial (either before a judge or a jury) if the defendant charged with the crime maintains a not guilty plea throughout proceedings. During proceedings, a defendant who has entered a not guilty plea may at any time change their plea to guilty or no contest. Many times, a plea agreement may be reached between the prosecutor and the defendant wherein the defendant pleads guilty to a certain offense(s) in exchange for dropped or reduced charges or favorable sentencing recommendations by the prosecutor.

A criminal case has many moving pieces and parts. It can be overwhelming and scary for anyone inexperienced or unknowledgeable about criminal law. Additionally, it can be an emotionally taxing and complicated process.
